HipCityVeg

I am not a vegan, but my sister is and when she came to town one day, I needed to find a good vegan restaurant for her. I was surprised to discover that there were not many in DC, but I was able to find a small but great place called HipCityVeg. It is located in Chinatown with maybe 3 tables and an area to sit at the window with quick order vegan options.

When I eat at vegan restaurants, I focus on vegetable options rather than fake meats and HipCityVeg has some great veggies. I have had several of their mushroom burgers and I enjoyed them all. My favorite is the Bistro Bella with a grilled portobella mushroom, herb Dijon, olive tapenade, red onion, tomato, artichoke, and arugula. I also always get their sweet potato fries and Sriracha aioli. The Bistro Bella is delicious with a great mix of the bright dijon, peppery argula, and earthy portobella that is perfectly cooked. The sweet potato fries are fresh with a right amount of salt and sweet which goes great in the Sriracha aioli which is not too hot, but does have a little kick. I also had their creamsicle milkshake made with soy ice cream. As someone who loves milkshakes made with actual milk, this one was really good and tastes like a creamsicle. My sister had the Philly Steak and she said she enjoyed it, so this might be a good option for vegans who are tired of the bland plate of veggies I see my sister subjected too so regularly.

One thing I will add is the people who work at HipCityVeg are consistently some of the nicest and funniest quick service people I have the pleasure of dealing with.

HipCityVeg is really good food, that happens to be vegan. I recommend giving it a chance.
